Ben's Berry nice day

OUTDOOR ED

BERRY & NOWRA EXPEDITION

Friday the 4th of May, Wollongong University PHE elective class Outdoor Ed, set out to explore the Berry Sport and Rec Facility prior to concluding the day with some Rock Climbing on the Shoalhaven River at Nowra.

Taking private transport, our car contained Josh, Zac, Jim and Jay - A big thankyou to Josh who was able to use his car for the entirety of the journey at the last minute. A bit early in the morning for my peers, I attempted to build the atmosphere for what was to be what i hoped (and proved) an exciting and adventurous day.

Arriving at the Berry Facility - we had a tour of the accomodation and discussed the various clientele and activities they can cater for. Her is a picture of me resting on one of the gates. taking in the pictaresque scenery.

Here is a picture of me at the completion of the maze after finding a plush toy. The crawl maze was constructed form old tyres and tarpaulin and required to crawl through hands and knees.

We were then directed to the multi-purpose court which has one prestigious awards for its design. Apparently it is entirely pre-fabrictaed and as such can be relocated. Natural sunlight- can completely light the interior saving on electricity.

The group participated in several inititiative games including carrying a ping pong ball along pipe for the entirety of the length of basketball court and constructing a set piece from plumbing hardware. Our final initiative game was a role play problem solving activity where we had to piece together clues to complete a spy-themed task.

We then proceeded southwards to Nowra and embarked on a rock-climbing adventure adjacent to the Shoalhaven River at "Ben's Walk".

We formed trio's and undertook several challenging climbs for our skill level and explored the issues that comes with heights, strength and positioning challenges that rock climbing can present. Here i am "chimneying" myself up the gorge without safety ropes.

However by far the most challenging climb required a final jump and to hold your body with three of your left fingers, i attempted it but could not hold the grip and was quite annoyed at my inability. As i have no problems with heights it was my strength i was most dissatisfied with.

A challenging day which provided many opportunities for myself to learn through exploration, consider potential employment opportunities, in conjunction with bonding with peers in an outdoor setting to work towards a common goals.
